Ideas I’ve Never Shared Before

How do you improve confidence and have more fun when drawing?

The way you wield a pencil makes all the difference.

A quick story. In my early 20’s, fresh out of design school, I met an artist who had worked for Walt Disney animation. Sensing opportunity, I shared one of my drawings with him. Expecting encouragement and a few tips, instead he grimaced, pointed and said, “Everything I need to know about you I can see in this one line. No confidence at all.” 

Oy.

Hurt at the time, but that cranky curmudgeon, in fact, handed me a gift.

Then and there, I began to learn the expressive power of line and tone, and how I might explore these ideas to become a better artist.

Fast forward 30+ years and thousands of drawings later, I’ve come to realize that good technique is not only a key to making satisfying drawings, it also adds joy to the drawing experience.

Life comes full circle. I now will share some of the best lessons I’ve learned on technique over decades of developing and honing these skills.

Cerebral vs. tactile. Most of my classes have focused on the mindset of an artist - how to see and think like an artist. In this class we will immerse ourselves in the other half of the experience - how to physically use our tools to get the best results.

In this class, we will explore:

  • Specific techniques that I’ve never shared before that can help anyone - from the beginner, to the seasoned artist

  • Unusual and fun ways to use a pencil, eraser and other gear that dramatically increase the beauty of a drawing

  • A step-by-step learning experience with fun exercises, a simple and beautiful finished drawing, and an interesting homework subject

  • Lively discussion and Q&A

Throughout, we are going to awaken our senses and have a lot of fun. All skill levels are welcome.
